Professor Su Guoxun was born in Beijing in 1942. He graduated from Chinese Academy of Social Sciences in 1987 with a PhD degree and since then, he has been working in the Institute of Sociology in Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. As the director of Theoretical Studies Office in the Institute of Sociology, Su presided over Foreign Sociology for more than 20 years and served as the editor in chief of Social Theory, Translated Works of Social Theory, Translated Masterpieces of Sociology. His field of research covers sociological theory, sociological methodology and the history of social thought. Su belongs to the first generation of social scholars cultivated by China since “The Reform and Opening-up” who witnessed and participated in the whole reconstruction process of sociology in China. Su started to sort out the development of sociology in Soviet and pioneered into Weber’s study in mainland China since he was a postgraduate student. In recent years, he advocated reinterpreting Weber's study under Chinese context from the transition of culture (especially from the perspective of the integration of Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism), so as to promote the development of Chinese social theory. The representative works of him include Rationalization and Its Limitations: An introduction to Weber’s Thought (1988), Comments on Contemporary Famous Western Philosophers (Volume of Social Philosophy) (1996), Selected Works of Western Social Theories in the Twentieth Century (2005), Social Theory and Contemporary Reality (2005), Globalization: Cultural Conflicts and Symbiosis (2006).
